I have residential cable modem internet access in my home. Is it possible to set this up to give my desktop and my wife’s laptop both access to the internet at the same time?
Also, my desktop is Windows and my wife’s laptop is a Mac, but I feel like that shouldn’t make a difference b/c both machines have cat-5 ports

Wireless might bot be the way to go, since it is a bit challenging. If you do go wireless, SET THE SECURITY SETTINGS.
All you need is a network hub with a couple of ports. Any computer store will have this and they are not expensive.

Yes, absolutely you can do what you want. If the computers are near each other, and near the cable modem, then the easiest way is with short Ethernet cables and a router. The router connects to all 3: to the modem, it looks like a computer, and to the computers it looks like an internet connection.
You can also do this with a wireless router. It works the same way except that radio communication is used instead of cables between the router and the computers (The router is still connected to the cable modem with a cable). However, you need to get a wireless card for each of the computers, the router you’d use is slightly more expensive, it’s not quite as fast, and it raises potential security issues. The security problems can be solve, but it’s an additional thing to worry about.
So, assuming the distances are short, you should buy something like a 4-port router (made by Linksys, Netgear, and others). Make sure it has a firewall built in (they pretty much all do). Do NOT buy an Ethernet “hub” or “switch”: make sure it’s a router.
It’ll probably come with a cable to attach it to your cable modem. You probably already have one such cable, so may need to buy one more. (You’ll need 3 all together for this set-up.)
The fact that one machine is a PC and the other is a Mac shouldn’t matter at all.
Buy a wireless router. Then hook up your cable modem tot eh router then the router to your desktop. Set up the router according to the manufacturers instructions.
If your laptop had built-in wireless, it should find the siganal. You will have to set up the laptop network settings.
You will have internet on both computers and you can share files between the two. Plus you can share the printer also – with no additional purchase.
I just have a cheap linksys router and run a line directly to my PC and one directly to my Airport system for my Mac laptop. It’s really pretty easy. If your wife has an airport system for her mac then I wouldn’t get a wireless router, but if she doesn’t then the internal modem on the mac should pick up the linksys wireless signal.
